“Elderspeak” is basically “Baby Talk” for seniors. Using terms such as “honey” and “sweetie” count as “Elderspeak”. While caregivers and family members may think of them as terms of endearment, seniors beg to differ. Researchers at the University of Kansas found that addressing residents in retirement facilities by their titles rather than “sweetheart” made the interaction more amiable. Seniors who were spoken to using “Elderspeak” went away feeling patronized.
