Lutheran Hillside Village: Shaking a Tailfeather at Peoria’s Senior Games

Lutheran Hillside Village had a major presence at the kickoff for the 2011 Heart of Illinois Senior Games in Peoria, Thursday, May 27. Not only did the senior living community’s square dance team win silver in the team dance competition, but the games’ Fine Arts Festival was catered by LHV’s dining services team. Led by Head Chef Mark Shoopman, LHV staff members turned out in chef’s whites and formal black and white waiters’ attire to offer up a sumptuous gourmet banquet for the senior athletes and artists in attendance.

LHV’s participation is just one of many ways that the Senior Games have upped their game in 2011. The event moved to the larger Peoria Riverplex, and with some 400 registered athletes, participation has nearly doubled over last year.

It’s a welcome sight to see an event that’s all about staying vigorous in later life receive a little rejuvenation of its own. “If we start thinking old, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy,” says Peoria TV personality Jim Wilhelm, who opened the Fine Arts Festival with a rousing pep talk. “I say, fight it. Exercise. Eat right. Heck, get a tummy tuck and botox if you have to. Do whatever you want to make your life richer and more full.”
