One never knows when the simple act of investing time and talent as a volunteer can bring blessings to life. On any Tuesday morning, you will find Bill Sullivan and Lucia Bellovich engaged in phone calls to clients who use LSS’ Living Safe Technologies (LST). Neither one watches the clock or lives by a predetermined pace; their only goal is to provide reassurance and help if needed.
“Bill and I both have a medical background, so we’re used to helping people,” says Lucia. “This is a great way to continue doing that after retirement.”
“Plus, I enjoy the social contact with people,” she says with a grin. “I can always use a good excuse to get out of the house.”
But one morning, a client shared with Bill that she was feeling short of breath. She wanted to “wait it out”, but Bill knew her event history and was determined to persuade her to seek medical help. Concerned that the client would not follow Bill’s advice, Kevin, a marketing specialist for LST, followed up with an LSS Home Health nurse.
It turned out she was in need of emergency hospitalization, and has since returned home. Clearly, Bill and Kevin were the right people in the right place at the right time. Without their personal attention, this story may have had a very different outcome.
“I had a successful career in medicine, and I’m very grateful for that,” says Bill, “but I always wanted to give something back in retirement. So when my wife and I heard about a need for volunteers at LSS, it sounded like a perfect chance to do that.”
