The Lutheran Senior Services Difference
As a Lutheran Senior Services (LSS) retirement community, Heisinger Bluffs is part of a 150-year tradition of compassionate service. At the heart of our philosophy of care is LSS’ Christian mission: Older Adults Living Life to the Fullest.
Serving with heart is at the core of all we do. We cherish people of all beliefs and strive to meet the complete needs of each person we serve — body, mind, and spirit. To that end, we are dedicated to a comprehensive approach to senior care and services, from our skilled team of caregivers to our full time chaplains who provide spiritual support for residents and their families.

Stories
Welcome to Heisinger Bluffs
Doris Wyrick
“After my husband passed away, I lived alone in my house for four years as a widow,” she says. “I was still driving, and I had wonderful neighbors, but the house was getting to be too much for me. So when I heard Heisinger Bluffs was opening the (independent living) apartments, I decided to go take a look.”
What she found was better than she’d hoped. “This is such a good place for someone,” she says. “You feel secure here. The people who are here to help you are just so good.”
A Family Tradition
Annie Schmutzler
Annie Schmutzler has been part of Heisinger Bluffs since its early beginnings in 1978, serving as a volunteer, and later as an employee. And now, in retirement, she’s back in her volunteer capacity. As she puts it, “I just can’t stay away.”
“I worked in Activities with Jerry Engelby,” she says, and, like most people who know Jerry, “I became really good friends with her. We had a lot of fun. We would meet people and invite them to the different activities. It was really great.”
In 2003, Annie was awarded the MoAHA “Employee of the Year”. Shortly thereafter, she retired as a Heisinger Bluffs employee, but began her life as a volunteer.
Annie has always thought of the Heisinger Bluffs as her second home. In 2009, she made it official and became a resident, living in one of the beautiful upstairs apartments in the historic mansion. “I feel that I have been specially blessed,” she says. “Everybody here is wonderful, and I feel blessed to be able to work with the staff and residents.”
“I have spent the last 20 some years here and I hope I can spend the next 20 here as well.”
