Welcome to Heisinger Bluffs & St. Joseph’s Bluffs
“After my husband passed away, I lived alone in my house for four years as a widow,” she says. “I was still driving, and I had wonderful neighbors, but the house was getting to be too much for me. So when I heard Heisinger Bluffs & St. Joseph’s Bluffs was opening the (independent living) apartments, I decided to go take a look.”
What she found was better than she’d hoped. “This is such a good place for someone,” she says. “You feel secure here. The people who are here to help you are just so good.”
A Family Tradition
Annie Schmutzler has been part of Heisinger Bluffs & St. Joseph’s Bluffs since its early beginnings in 1978, serving as a volunteer, and later as an employee. And now, in retirement, she’s back in her volunteer capacity. As she puts it, “I just can’t stay away.”
“I worked in Activities with Jerry Engelby,” she says, and, like most people who know Jerry, “I became really good friends with her. We had a lot of fun. We would meet people and invite them to the different activities. It was really great.”
In 2003, Annie was awarded the MoAHA “Employee of the Year”. Shortly thereafter, she retired as a Heisinger Bluffs & St. Joseph’s Bluffs employee, but began her life as a volunteer.
Annie has always thought of Heisinger Bluffs & St. Joseph’s Bluffs as her second home. In 2009, she made it official and became a resident, living in one of the beautiful upstairs apartments in the historic mansion. “I feel that I have been specially blessed,” she says. “Everybody here is wonderful, and I feel blessed to be able to work with the staff and residents.”
“I have spent the last 20 some years here and I hope I can spend the next 20 here as well.”
The crack of the bat, the cry of the umpire…for Heisinger Bluffs resident Ross Boeger, this is the most wonderful time of the year.
“I’ve spent my whole life in baseball,” Ross says. “I started league play when I was 14 years old playing with the Hartsburg town team. I played American Legion ball, I played with the Ban Johnson league, all kinds of small leagues.” There was a short interruption in his career as a third baseman when he went on a tour of duty in Japan – but only because his paratrooper unit’s team needed him to play shortstop instead of third.
Nowadays, Coach Boeger is content to keep up with the game from his apartment at Heisinger Bluffs – especially when the Cardinals are on. And he’ll be glad to tell you his thoughts on the current direction for the St. Louis ball club. “I wasn’t disappointed to see Pujols go,” he says. “The Cardinals will do just fine without him. We’ve still got a heck of a good team. Freese is a great player, and if Molina could run, he’d be terrific. I think they got a good chance this year.”
Since arriving at Heisinger Bluffs, Ross has found steadily more people to talk baseball with. “I’m sort of an old homebody. I’d rather stay in and watch a game,” he says. “But there’s all kinds of things to do here. I’ve really liked it since we’ve been here. It’s a great place.”
It’s been nearly seven decades since D-Day. As the years pass, first-hand accounts of the day that changed the course of history are becoming rare. But the events of June 6, 1944, are still fresh for Heisinger Bluffs resident Robert “Dusty” Rhoads. He was on one of more than 5,000 ships supporting the 4,000 ship-to-shore D-Day landings.
Rhoads and his shipmates were fortunate. The Merchant Marine suffered the largest ratio of casualties of any branch of service during World War II.
When he returned home, his wife Mabel was waiting for him. They have known each other 80 years and have been married for 72 of them. The couple continued their service across Missouri as Dusty helped construct an ammunition plant at Weldon Springs and headed to Knob Noster to help build Whiteman Air Force Base. Mabel kept things shipshape at home and cared for their three children — two girls and one boy.
“It all went by in a hurry,” reflects Mabel Rhoads. “We moved to Heisinger Bluffs to be near our daughters. It is one of the best locations in the area. It’s like a little city. We’ve got awfully good neighbors,” she says. “We’ve made some really good friends.”
“Some of our neighbors are people we’ve known growing up from Centertown,” says Dusty, “but some of them are from England, France, and Germany, just all over the world.” Which seems fitting for an ex-Merchant Marine who spent his youth traveling the world. Nowadays, the world comes to Dusty.
