Welcome to Laclede Groves
If there’s been one constant in Marilyn King’s life, it’s been her art.
Today, the walls of her house at Laclede Groves are covered with her landscapes and studies of flowers, and her love for the medium jumps off of every canvas.
Sharing her craft has helped Marilyn make a lot of friends in her new home. And lately, she’s been happily converting her fellow residents through an art class she teaches in the craft room. “We’ve been living here (at Laclede Groves) for about a year now, and everybody here is so friendly,” she says. “Let me tell you – we lived in our house for 32 years, and we don’t miss it a bit. It’s amazing.”
A place to belong, a sense of purpose, and the time to create – what more can an artist ask for?
Home & Garden
“I’ve been writing since I was a little kid,” says Viola Kuecker, a retired RN and Laclede Groves’ author in residence. “I started off signing autograph books. We’d pass them around and write in each other’s books. It was fun.” But, one thing led to another, and Viola wound up spending the next 60 years with a pen in her hand.
Over the years, Viola has always used her gift out of a deep desire to share her faith with the world around her. In fact, some of her first major writing gigs were for Lutheran Tract Ministry, where she wrote short inspirational works for use in mission work. “When I was 13, I said I was going to be a missionary in Africa,” she recalls. “That never materialized, but after I wrote these tracts, I got a letter from a man in Africa asking if we could send him some more ‘Good News’. So in a way, I did go to Africa after all!”
Viola admits that she hasn’t spent as much time writing since moving to Laclede Groves. “I’ve got half a children’s book in my computer, but my activities have changed since I’ve been here, so I haven’t sat down to finish it.” Life at Laclede Groves tends to keep you busy, she says. “There’s always something to do on campus. Even though I’m a writer, I don’t like to just sit in my apartment and do nothing all day. I love being out with people, and there’s plenty of people here. I love it here.”
For 35 fantastic years, the look and feel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s editorial page was defined by the work of Tom Engelhardt, the paper’s staff cartoonist. And you can tell from his body of work that he enjoyed every minute of it.
“Every once in a while,” Tom says, “I would sit at my desk and think to myself, ‘I can’t believe they’re paying me to have this much fun.’”
A native St. Louisan, Tom couldn’t have asked for a richer time period in which to be working as a satirist. In an era when the news of the day included civil rights, the Kennedy assassination, the moon landing, the Vietnam war, Watergate and Woodstock, Engelhardt’s illustrations gave a human perspective to larger-than-life historical events.
Today, Tom still works on illustrations at his drafting table in his apartment at Laclede Groves. “I have a couple of freelance things going on,” he says. “A friend of mine in Florida is a very prolific writer of letters to the editor. She wants to collect them into a small book and asked if I would be interested in illustrating the letters. It’s an interesting project.”
It’s a good retirement, Tom says. “I wanted to be a cartoonist all my life. I just did in my professional life what I had been doing since I was seven or eight years old.”
