Welcome to Lenoir Woods

Mike and Priscilla Farrall

homes for seniorsSeeking relief from the summer heat near their Austin home, the pair of retired academians would tour around the Midwest in their RV. Along the way, they stopped at a lot of retirement communities. “None of them measured up to Lenoir Woods,” Mike says.

Today, when the Farralls look out the front door of their patio home, the woods are there to greet them. And just beyond the woods, they can still find the same energetic social life they were used to living in college towns. “Columbia’s just like a little Austin,” Priscilla says. “It’s got the same flavor…it’s just a little smaller.”

“Our time here has been better than we expected,” Priscilla says. “We’re fascinated that we know more neighbors here than we ever did in Texas during our working lives.” The secret, she says, is making it a point to sit down with anyone you can during lunch and dinner time. “We don’t make dates to meet anyone,” she says. “We just sit down with whoever’s sitting there. There’s nothing like eating lunch with a neighbor.”

While the Farralls weren’t the best Texans, it turns out they’re going to be great Missourians.

Elizabeth Ann Morgan

homes for seniors“My old house was more than 100 years old and very large. It had four bedrooms, it had a lot of yard, and so it was a lot of work. Now, my new home at Lenoir Woods? It’s the handiest house I’ve ever had. It’s just a heavenly place to live.

“The staff takes care of the snow and the leaves and anything else I could need. Everything’s fixed just the way I like it, and it’s terrific having a maintenance department to call when something needs fixed. They get right on it, whatever the problem is.

“They are all so warm and friendly. They thank you for letting them serve you. It’s truly, truly wonderful. They think of what they do as being a ministry, and that adds a dimension to life at Lenoir Woods that you don’t see anywhere else. The staff always tries to make it the best day for each of us.

“I’m healthier since I moved here. I’m exercising an hour a day, using the weights, walking the nature trails… And just being around other people is tremendously helpful. There’s always someone to walk with or work out with. I never feel lonely.

“Everything you need is right here!”

Lyall “Fletch” Fletcher

homes for seniors“I’m very pleased with my decision to move here,” he says, lining up a shot on the pool table he loves to play on daily. “I really think I made the right decision.”

“It’s good for me here. I’m diabetic, and here I’m taking care of it better since I moved here than I ever have before,” he says, always moving to the next shot. “And the staff treats me pretty good here.”

Fletch plays at least two games a day in Lenoir Woods’ game room with residents and staff alike. He’s also in charge of keeping the table in good order and setting up tournaments, one of which he ended up winning. “We have quite a few people here who play,” he says. “Experienced players, too. They keep me on my toes.”

For Fletch, this is what retirement should look like.

How did you come to Lenoir Woods?

Joe Barone

BaroneStoriesTabIf you’re going to be a mystery novelist, there are worse places to grow up than a state mental facility.

That’s where Lenoir Woods‘ resident author Joe Barone came of age, and its the setting for his first published novel, The Body in the Record Room. “My father was the superintendent for the facility, and we all lived in a house there on the grounds starting when I was eight years old,” Joe says. “My book doesn’t have anything to do with anything I saw when I was growing up, but they say you should always write what you know.”

Joe wrote Body soon after he moved to Lenoir Woods. ” I love it here,” he says. “It’s like living in the small town where I grew up in the 1950s.” (Before his family moved to the house at the mental institution, of course.) “The people are nice, and they look after each other, but you still have your privacy and independence.”

Cyrus Harbourt

CyrusHarbourtStoriesTabThis former university professor is a lifelong music lover: “Music as a part of my life goes all the way back to the fifth grade,” he says. “It’s always been a hobby.”

Calling his love of the saxophone a ‘hobby’ might be underselling it somewhat — he owns all four of the main saxophones, tenor, baritone, soprano and alto. And he’s spent a good amount of time, both before and after retiring from the electrical engineering department at Mizzou, playing in local dance band “Memories” in venues around the Columbia area.

During that time, he and his wife Mary found themselves beginning to plan for the future. “We were looking ahead after I retired and decided it was time to stop supporting a big house and a whole yard,” he recalls. “We decided we wanted to put ourselves in a situation to be as independent as we could be.”

The move hit the right note with this musician! “It has exceeded our expectation in many respects,” he says. “We do enjoy the wide range of activities available out here. There always seems to be something to do every day.”

And he hopes to add to the activities calendar in his own way. Presently, he’s looking for help playing those four different types of saxophones. “I am convinced there are some latent saxophone players here at Lenoir,” he says, “so I’m trying to put together a saxophone quartet.”

Ed and Judith Chmielewski

ChmielewskisStoriesTabIt would be easy to mistake Ed and Judith Chmielewskis’ patio home at Lenoir Woods for a gallery. The walls are lined with works of art gathered from their travels around the world, from Inuit soapstone carvings to Japanese prints to large scale photographs taken here in the Midwest.

But the couple aren’t just patrons of the visual arts; Ed and Judith have been instrumental (no pun intended) in arranging for performances by the Missouri Symphony Orchestra on the Lenoir Woods campus.

“We both appreciate things that satisfy our entertainment needs but stimulate the intellect as well,” says Judith. “Columbia has such a rich arts and theater scene to take advantage of. We love being able to bring those things here to share with our neighbors.”

That’s because, as much as the Chmielewskis love being part of Columbia’s arts community, they also love being part of Lenoir Woods’ senior living community. “The people here are so dedicated to one another,” says Ed. “You don’t feel stigmatized because you’re getting older. Everyone simply accepts it. There’s a sense of real caring.”

“A sense of joy, even,” says Judith, picking up where her husband left off. “People often think living in a retirement community is a downer, and that’s not the case here at all. It’s so upbeat. There’s always something new to experience, and we’re only too happy to help make that happen by bringing these groups to campus.”

Dr. Tom Shrout

TomShroutStoriesTab“I came across an observation once in a daily devotion,” says Dr. Tom Shrout, retired professor of religion and philosophy at Culver Stockton University. “’Our faith is 2,000 years old. Our knowledge is not.’ What is the meaning of the stories that are told in the Bible and what do they mean to us today?” Tom spent 15 years at Culver Stockton trying to figure that out, and before that, he served as dean of the Missouri School of Religion, which was later absorbed into the University of Missouri.

In 1954, Tom discovered that a friend of his, Pastor Edmond Miller, was serving as administrator at Lenoir Woods. “I didn’t have room at my house for all the gardening I wanted to do, so Ed gave me a garden here,” Tom says. “After spending a little time there, there was no question where we would want to retire. We loved it here.”

And now that he’s made his home at Lenoir Woods, he hasn’t been disappointed. “It’s a terrific place to live,” he says, adding with a smile, “There’s almost too much to do here.”

Of course, a lot of what Tom does even today is read. After all, you can take a teacher out of the classroom, but you can’t take the classroom out of the teacher.
