Stories

Welcome to Lutheran Hillside Village

From Visitor to Patient to Satisfied Resident

JoAnn Aimone

JoAnnAimoneStoriesTab“Not long after I moved to Lutheran Hillside Village, I hurt my back,” says JoAnn Aimone, a retired nurse. “I was just sitting here thinking, ‘Oh gosh, what am I going to do?’ and within the hour, I had three people call and say, ‘If you need a push, I’ll be happy to help you.’”

“That is one of the things about this place that is so heartwarming to me,” she says. “There are so many people here who want to help.” And JoAnn herself is one of those people. A longtime volunteer, JoAnn has found herself surrounded by like-minded people at LHV, so many of whom have the same kind of servant heart she has.

JoAnn reads to the people in the care center on Tuesday mornings, she helps with bingo every Saturday morning, she transports people to chapel services on Sunday mornings, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

“I hope to make a tiny bit of difference,” she says. “It’s just part of me for some reason. I’ve been very fortunate in my life, and I enjoy passing it on.”

A New Life at LHV

Our New Woodshop

Lyle Miller

LyleMillerStoriesTabWhen Lutheran Hillside Village resident Lyle Miller says, “I’ve always been pretty active,” you need to understand that his definition of “pretty active” may be different from most people’s. This is, after all, a man who was playing tennis at the age of 88.

“I’ve been lucky not to have many joint pains,” he says. “I was playing with a guy ten years younger than me. We were the two runners; we could both still run up to the ball.” He’s also an avid golfer and a lifelong sporting enthusiast. “Instead of watching something on TV, I’d rather be involved in it.”

Which made Lutheran Hillside Village a perfect fit for him, as there are so many ways to get involved.

Lyle decided to make the move after a pair of injuries required him to slow down for a bit. While the doctors haven’t yet cleared him to return to the court, he feels like the prognosis is good and he’s making real progress.

His time at Lutheran Hillside Village has certainly helped that. “When I came here, I checked out what’s available,” he says. “I saw they had two new treadmills, cycles, rowing machines…I decided, yep, that’s all I need!” He also enjoys the rich schedule of exercise classes, which helps him to recuperate from his recent surgeries.

One Big Family

Bill Roger

BillRogerStoriesTabBill Roger first picked up a deer rifle when he was 10 years old. Now 89 years old, he bagged a wild boar in Florida last April, a buck in Illinois in November, and he’s planning further trips for the new year. “I’ve always been an outdoorsman,” Bill says. “I hunt deer, doves, ducks, and geese. I go fly fishing. Plus, I love nature photography. If it’s outdoors, I’m there.”

But some of his favorite stomping grounds are close to home. (Which is good, because hunting locally means he can make it to more Bradley basketball games.) So when his wife Marilyn began to need memory care, the Rogers decided to make the move to Lutheran Hillside Village. It kept them close to family, friends, and all the activities they’d always loved. “They just do a great job here,” Bill says. “The people are super friendly, and they just treat you with the utmost respect.”

“But one of the best parts is the food,” Bill says with a smile. “A full menu every night plus specials…it’s really fabulous.”

Bill’s quick to point out that the door to his apartment is just 30 feet away from his parking spot. So while he’s involved with many activities and groups at Lutheran Hillside Village, it’s a snap for him to get back in the hunt whenever the mood strikes.

retirement living 61614Greetings!

Welcome to Lutheran Hillside Village in Peoria! Our residents have decided to join hundreds of older adults who have chosen the active, purpose-driven lifestyle offered in our village. People are friendly here, and residents don’t take long to get acquainted, often becoming fast friends in no time at all. Others have enjoyed renewing relationships with folks they’ve known over the years. A remark often heard is, “We truly are a family here.” Once new residents settle in, we encourage them to get involved in the many activities and volunteer opportunities available here.

As a continuum of care retirement community, Lutheran Hillside Village offers all levels of care. Lifestyle options include residential living for active, independent seniors; Samaritan Place assisted living services for people with physical difficulties; and Bethel Place assisted living services for those with early- to mid-stage Alzheimer’s disease and other related memory impairments. Lutheran Home is Medicare and Medicaid certified and provides short- and long-term skilled nursing services, including a dedicated neighborhood for those with mid- to late-stage memory loss.
