Good Neighbor Program by
Lutheran Senior Services
Since 1975, Lutheran Senior Services’ Good Neighbor Program has linked clients with independent caregivers. If you are looking for non-medical care at home, our free referral service can connect you with an independent caregiver to lend a hand.
Our caregiver referral service can refer independent caregivers for:
- Meal preparation
- Light housecleaning
- Laundry and ironing
- Shopping and errands
- Help with bathing, dressing, and hygiene
- Help with daily activities
Handyman Referral Service
Handyman referrals to self-employed contractors are offered as a public service. These individuals can perform:
- General home repairs
- Plumbing, electrical, or carpentry work
- Gutter cleaning
- Yard care
Clients are responsible for determining the suitability, training, or experience of any individual hired.
Each Good Neighbor Program caregiver undergoes a police background check, and is screened through the Family Care Safety Registry when they begin their association with LSS. Clients are responsible for determining the suitability, training, or experience of any individual hired.
Since Good Neighbor Program caregivers are self-employed, the client pays the worker directly for care or services. Cash or personal checks are accepted. Depending upon the situation, the client or the caregiver assumes responsibility for paying taxes if required. For information on paying Social Security taxes, call the Social Security Administration at 1.800.772.1213. For information about paying federal taxes, call the Internal Revenue Service at 1.800.829.1040. A personal tax consultant should also be contacted.
Handymen either charge hourly or flat rates. The client bears the responsibility for negotiating the total cost of the job prior to start of service.
Good Neighbor caregivers are paid an hourly rate ranging from $10 to $15 per hour. In most instances, there is a four-hour minimum. There is limited availability of a two-hour minimum in a few designated senior apartment buildings. Cost is determined by the number of people receiving help and the specific services provided in the home.
