Food, transportation, medical equipment, guidance on benefit processes – sometimes you need some help. Aging Answers is here for you!
Lutheran Senior Services’ Aging Answers is a free, call-in resource staffed by social workers trained in age-related issues. For people aged 60 and older (or 50 with a disability) and their loved ones, this resource can help answer questions like what care options are available or how to navigate major life transitions.
“It is such a helpful program. With our in-home assessments we are able to see unmet needs and identify resources,” said Donna Adams, Home Health Social Worker for LSS. “Our goal is to help older adults remain independently and safely in their homes as long as possible,” she added.
The process starts with a phone call where Donna or another Aging Answers staff member will gather information. From there a two-hour in-home assessment may be scheduled. The assessment includes a comprehensive needs review and home safety check, determining one’s ability to function in the home, exploring care options, developing a care plan, and recommending resources.
“Often people will call us about one thing, but when we delve deeper, we find other needs,” said Adams.
Through partnerships and grants, Aging Answers can even help get utilities turned back on, offer discounted in-home care, provide durable medical equipment, and deliver spiritual support. A unique offering is the Eliezer Fund, which helps retired career church workers who served in the ministry for more than 20 years.
“We had a couple who worked in the church for more than 50 years. They each developed memory issues and needed private duty support. The fund helps provide seven days a week in-home care,” said Adams.
Aging Answers staff members also are available to offer community education presentations to help provide information on aging and wellness.
“We’re here to help! There are so many things we can provide. If you’re in need, age 50+ with a disability or 60+ give us a call. You might be surprised by what we can do!” said Adams.
